Why does backward planning help?

Dense boards create too many possible next moves. Working backward shrinks the problem to one requirement: what has to be true immediately before the final block can exit? The competitor strategy guide recommends asking which gate, lane, obstacle, and preceding move form that chain.

A four-step backward chain

1. Name the final door.
2. Identify the lane the block must occupy before entering.
3. Find the obstacle that prevents that lane.
4. Find the single move that removes or changes the obstacle.

When is this method unsafe?

If the source’s final gate or opening state differs from yours, the backward chain belongs to another layout. Check the board-match guide before copying the sequence.
