Two details in that description matter more than the rest. The connection is triggered by alignment, not by clearing a set number of blocks. And the reward is access, not progress on its own, so a connection that opens a path you cannot use yet has bought you very little.

What does matching colors aligned correctly mean?

It means the condition is about relative position, not proximity. Two blocks can sit next to each other and still not satisfy the alignment the mechanic wants, and two blocks that start far apart can become eligible once the right color reaches the right place.

This is why “clear the blocks around the magnet” is incomplete advice. Space may be necessary, but the alignment is the requirement. Your question should be which specific color has to arrive at which position, and which blocks currently prevent that from happening.
